1989 -  After traveling 12 years and more than 5 billion miles (8 billion km), Voyager 2 passes within about 3,000 miles (5,000 km) of Neptune.  It discovers six moons that had not been seen from Earth.  It takes close up pictures of Triton and registers information about the moon that hadn't been known before.
